PRE-COURSE WORK

In preparation for this workshop think of 3 or 4 things that are issues for you at the moment. Things that you are struggling to decide, resolve or move forward. They can be from any area of your life, e.g. where to go on holiday, what bit of a to-do list to tackle first, how to best spend time this weekend. They don’t need to be earth-shattering but do need to be meaningful to you. We will be doing some brief exercises talking and thinking about them. You will find that your learning is much more powerful and effective when these areas are not role play but real ones. You will be under no obligation to discuss your issues with the whole group, but with one other person. It is entirely up to you how much info you share and there is no need to discuss anything you are uncomfortable with.

There is no prior reading required for this workshop but if you are interested you may want to check out Nancy Kline’s book 'Time to Think'.

This is an interactive workshop with lots of small group exercises:

Background information

What is coaching?

Coaching is a time-limited process involving protected one-to-one sessions, and is focused on achieving outcomes. The sessions form dedicated time for reflection: a coach will listen to a client and challenge their thinking, but will not offer advice or problem-solve on their behalf.

What can coaching realistically achieve?

Coaching is protected time to explore professional challenges, and can enhance leadership confidence and impact. Commonly mentioned benefits of coaching include better personal and organisational performance, higher motivation, career opportunity and advancement, improved work-life balance, better self-reflection and decision making and improved change management.

What are the aims of using coaching as a professional development tool in healthcare?

To increase potential and to enhance the careers of those who access coaching. Coaching can contribute to excellence in education and performance. In doing so it can contribute to better patient care and an improved patient journey.
