DescriptionIncrease your understanding and awareness of hidden disabilities, including mental health conditions and neurodiversity. This course will provide you with knowledge on how you might support a postgraduate doctor or dentist with a hidden disability. The course is part of a series of Understanding Disability workshops for Faculty, Educational/Clinical Supervisors and Medical Education Teams. We recommend attending the Introduction to Disability Awareness Course first. Course topics include: - Defining a hidden disability - Exploring a range of hidden disabilities including: Mental Health conditions: Anxiety disorders Bipolar disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Neurodiversity: ADHD and Rejection Sensitivity Disorder (RSD) Autism - Discussing how these conditions may affect a trainee in the workplace and training - The Equality Act - An exploration of reasonable adjustments - How you can support a trainee or colleague with a hidden disability

Aims

The aim is to provide you with knowledge of mental health conditions and neurodifferences to support postgraduates through their course and into the working environment.

Objectives

The objectives for this course are:

• To understand what a disability is and how this might affect someone working in a clinical environment.

• To understand what is anxiety and bipolar disorder.

• To understand what is ADHD and Autism.

• To provide an overview of how this may affect someone in studying or working environments.

• To recognise what adjustments are available.

• To obtain the knowledge to support a postgraduate doctor or dentist through their training programme and in the clinical environment

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, you will:

• Have an overview of what ADHD and Autism are and how this may affect someone studying or working.

• Have an overview of what anxiety and bipolar disorder are and how this may affect someone studying or working.

• Be able to effectively support a postgraduate doctor or dentist through their training programme and in the clinical environment

• Have an awareness of appropriate adjustments for trainees and colleagues with a disability.
