DescriptionBecoming an IMG peer mentor: participants will learn the building blocks required to be an effective and safe peer mentor.
Additional information

This online session will be interactive and involve small-group breakout room work as well as whole group discussion.

The training occurs on zoom: it is essential you join from somewhere quiet where you can participate fully, with your video on due to the interactive nature of this workshop. Please ensure you are not having to attend to children or pets during the course.

Attention will be paid to creating a safe learning environment where you feel able to practice what you are learning straight away.

 

  • Please only book this course if you are available to attend the course and have applied for study leave in advance where required.
  • Please only book onto one instance of the same course.
  • If your availability changes, please cancel your place as soon as possible. If this is within one week of the course, you must email the team on england.lsfdcourses.yh@nhs.net.
  • Online bookings for the course will close one week prior to the course start date. If you wish to attend after this, you must email the team and they will inform you whether this is possible.

Aims

Aims of the training sessions:

  • To understand what a) effective and b) safe peer mentoring is
  • To learn and practice the skills required to be a peer mentor
  • To create a peer mentoring faculty of IMG trainees, for IMG trainees
Objectives

Specific objectives:

  • To understand the principles underpinning peer mentoring and the components of an effective peer mentoring interaction
  • To practice peer mentoring skills in a safe environment
  • To reflect on how this skill set could provide support to IMG colleagues
  • To understand boundaries and safety in the context of the peer mentor relationship
  • To understand when peer mentoring is not appropriate and signpost accordingly
Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • understand what peer mentoring is and is not, and how it can add value to their professional relationships
  • understand the components of a peer mentoring relationship and peer mentoring interactions
  • have explored some of the skills required in peer mentoring
  • have a framework to use in a future peer mentoring session
  • be aware of alternative sources of support to signpost trainees if necessary
