Description | Delegates will be given an introduction into the world of psychodynamics and learn all about various defence mechanisms. These defence mechanisms can come into the coaching room and impact the work. An understanding of what might be getting in the way of the coaching can empower the coach and enable them to work at a deeper level with clients. After attending the course coaches will have an increased awareness of what might be happening in the coaching relationship that they had not been aware of before. | ||

Aims | To learn about defence mechanisms and how to work with them in line with best practice as a coach.

Objectives | Slides presentation with information presented. Large group discussion to check understanding. Small group breakout discussion with feedback to the main group, and further discussion. Case study work including small group work with discussion in the main group. A workbook with additional references and resources will also be provided. | ||
Learning outcomes | 1. To understand what the term Psychodynamics means. 2. To know the difference between conscious, preconscious and unconscious processes. 3. To understand what the most common defence mechanisms are, how to identify them and how they might present in coaching sessions. 4. To explore how best coaches might respond when a defence mechanism is present in a coaching session. 5. To be aware of the limits of a coach’s remit when working with defence mechanisms. | ||
