DescriptionWe expect doctors to be great decision makers. And yet only rarely is "Decision Making" taught / learned as a discrete topic. It's almost as if we expect people to catch on by osmosis or chance. Yet there is now 30 years of research describing how human beings make decisions. And of course in consultations there are two people involved in the decision making. Time then to open Pandora's Box on decision making!

Aims
  • Understand the principles of shared decision making
  • Understand principles of human decision making
  • Understand how decisions might be made better
  • Know where to find more resources to improve shared decision making
Objectives

We will:

  • Explore, using interactive examples, the psychology of human decision making
  • Using interactive examples, we will demonstrate the importance of shared decision making when creating management plans in health care
  • Practice shared decision making using an avatar
  • Discuss approaches to teaching and learning shared decision making with GP registrars and others
Learning outcomes
  • Increased knowledge of decision making theory
  • Increased awareness of others approaches to decision making
  • Increased confidence in approaching discussions about decision making with others e.g. GP Registrars
