Description: Good communication skills are important for several reasons but can often be a challenge in the high stress, time poor clinical environment. As the NHS focuses on a more patient centred approach, it is vital that the medical professional understands how to build an open, trusting rapport with their patients through active listening, understanding, clear speech and empathy. Good communication skills have also been proven to increase the medical professionals job satisfaction, increase patient satisfaction and decrease the number of complaints made. This interpersonal skills workshop has been designed to develop the participants knowledge, skill, and confidence in the different styles of communication. We address verbal, nonverbal and paraverbal communication and how all three need to work together, and complement each other to produce effortless, and effective communication.

Description: Imposter Syndrome or Phenomenon is defined as ‘a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evidence of success’. ‘Imposters’ suffer chronic self-doubt and are unable to internalise their accomplishments however successful they are in their field. This phenomenon is surprisingly common. It can get in the way of professional progress and job satisfaction. Because it is so common, it is helpful for trainers to be aware of it, and to understand how they might work with trainees who experience it. It is normal for trainers themselves to also experience it. This one-day interactive workshop looks at what Imposter Syndrome is, how it can sabotage trainee progress, and what tools are available to manage it. The day will include evidence-based solutions using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) techniques. ACT has a huge body of evidence behind it and an impressive pedigree in providing practical tools that are easy to grasp and use.

Description: A virtual networking event for International Medical Graduate (IMG) doctors starting training in the Yorkshire and The Humber region in February 2023. GP Trainees who started in August 2022 and are starting their first secondary care placements in February 2023 are also welcome. The aim of these sessions is to set up a pilot of virtual networking events to support new IMG doctors in their transition into training and working in the NHS. Each session will be interactive with breakout rooms for trainees to engage with one another. Lectures and Q&A panels will be recorded but we would strongly encourage access to microphones and cameras during the breakout rooms sessions to maximise the opportunity for participants to speak to other IMG trainees.

Description: An exciting and engaging 2-day medical education course for trainees, delivered by experts in their field from DoctorsTraining. In the first session we will explore education theory, learning needs analysis, learning outcomes, constructive alignment and provide time for critically evaluate you own teaching plan. There will be an opportunity to look at different teaching strategies and modalities to understand the relative strengths, challenges, and opportunities to develop a full set of tools as an educator. The main focus of day 2 will be the role of an educator and supervisor of trainees, undergraduate students and members of the multi-professional team. This day will prepare senior trainees for a formal role as a clinical or educational supervisors and is aligned to the GMC’s 7 domains of trainer accreditation. The final section will give delegates the opportunity to explore future careers and leadership opportunities in medical education from our very experienced and diverse faculty. Between day 1 and day 2 delegates will be tasked with revising their teaching plan and delivering a training session to be observed by a peer from the course or their own supervisor; and completing a formal evaluation and personal reflection.
