Aims

To introduce participants to the knowledge and skill needs of an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Dental Core Trainee (DCT)

Objectives

To prepare the new DCT in the following:

• Life as a DCT and adapting to the hospital environment

• The duties of an OMFS DCT on the ward/ emergency department/ theatre/ outpatient setting

• What is expected of an “on-call” DCT

• Clerking a patient and caring for patients on the ward

• Recognising the Sick Patient

• Preparing for a ward round

• Basic Ward Skills e.g. cannulation, blood taking

• Soft Tissue Trauma and suturing

• Odontogenic infections and the assessment of facial swelling

• OMF trauma/ OMF examination - including mandibular, zygomatic, mid-face and nasal fracture assessment

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants should be able to demonstrate improved knowledge and awareness of the learning objectives and feel more comfortable and prepared for their upcoming OMFS role.
