Aims

An F2 Regional study day of discussion and simulation. Attendees will rotate through three interactive workshops.

Objectives

Workshop 1 - Difficult Conversations

Facilitator - Nurse Consultant in Palliative care & end of life

End of life conversations with both the patient and relatives is an area staff often continue to struggle with. There remain many barriers to this occurring, including fear of causing distress and clinicians feeling unprepared for these conversations. The simulation/discussion workshop will include:

  • A conversation between an HCP and patient about their preferences and wishes for their final months of life
  • A conversation with a patient about resuscitation and the creation of a treatment escalation plan
  • Informing family members of the deterioration of a patient and likely impending death, both on the phone and in person
  • Informing a family member of the death of a patient over the phone

Workshop 2 - Acute Clinical skills

Facilitator - Medical Registrar / CTF

The workshop includes immersive simulated scenarios that will involve undertaking advanced clinical skills, such as:

  • Chest drain insertion in the deteriorating patient
  • Lumber puncture

Workshop 3 - The Deteriorating Patient

Facilitator - Medical Registrar / Simulation Fellow

A chance for candidates to work as a team or lead a team in the assessment and treatment of the deteriorating patient in a simulated environment. The aim of the scenarios is to give candidates the confidence and knowledge to prepare for complex/unusual presentations in a safe and supportive learning environment.
