Aims

You will be provided with an overview of health protection, including the system-wide partnership working that is in place to deliver health protection within the context of controlling outbreaks of communicable diseases. In the second half of the workshop, you will explore as a group a specific example of an outbreak and how this was investigated and managed.

Learning outcomes
  • Understanding of the steps involved in outbreak/incident investigation and management, including the limitations of available powers and debrief using lessons to improve future working.
  • Describe the main stakeholders and agencies at a local, national and international level involved in health protection and their roles and responsibilities, including in emergency preparedness.
  • Understand the role and value of disease surveillance and epidemiology in the detection of outbreaks and how they inform management and control measures.
