Aims

Designed to develop skills that are necessary in the management of critically ill patients, CCRiSP aims to instil a system of assessment, institute basic treatment, and recognise when and who to call for help when faced with a critically ill surgical patient.

During this intensive course, you will participate in a variety of practical training sessions, including:

•Learning a system of assessment for the critically ill

•Understanding the subtlety and variety of critical illness presentation, alongside ways to improve its detection

•Understanding the importance of avoiding complications if possible

•Recognising the surgeon’s role in delivering multidisciplinary care to surgical patients

•Interacting with nursing staff, other surgeons, intensivists and anaesthetists

•Delivering the information and support that patients and their relatives require during surgical care

Please be aware that the programme timings are for illustrative purposes only and may be subject to change - please bear this in mind when making your travel arrangements.

Objectives

CCrISP is an interactive course that combines a variety of teaching and learning techniques, such as case-based skill stations, demonstrations and simulated patient scenarios of varying difficulty to allow clinical application of knowledge. You will be encouraged to share knowledge and experience with your peers throughout the course and will be allocated a faculty mentor who will provide you with tailored feedback as you progress through the course.

Before the course you will be sent the CCRiSP handbook - make sure you read this, as it is essential to the course and will ensure you get the most out of the two days. Accompanying the handbook, and to help you prepare for the course you’ll be enrolled on to the RCS virtual learning environment (VLE) where we ask you to complete a short multiple choice assessment. This is an open book assessment which requires an 80% pass mark.

This is an assessed course which includes a summative assessment of your contribution to the skills stations and moulage (simulated patient) scenarios

Learning outcomes

Candidates receive the greatest benefit when CCrISP is taken in CT2/ST2, but candidates in the earlier part of specialty training (CT1/ST1) may also apply. However, it is strongly recommended that candidates have had six months general surgery training, not including foundation training, prior to attending the course.

Foundation trainees are not eligible to attend this course and are recommended to attend the Systematic Training in Acute Illness Recognition and Treatment for Surgery (START Surgery) course.
