DescriptionThis one-day Royal College of Surgeons’ practical course will improve participants’ decision making about the role of resuscitative thoracotomy, and how to integrate this into the trauma resuscitation. It will be based on best current evidence and emphasise damage control principles. Participants will have maximal surgical exposure on porcine models and learn all the skills needed to achieve optimal outcomes from resuscitative thoracotomy. The day will be led by a mixed faculty of surgeons, ED and anaesthesia medical staff.

Aims

The course delivery includes the following format;

  • Didactic sessions.
  • Decision-making scenarios.
  • Interactive case discussions.
  • Basic Surgical Skills and practical work on porcine models in small groups.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Be able to manage the arrested patient; working with the trauma team pre- thoracotomy and during resuscitative thoracotomy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy specific to resuscitative thoracotomy including cardiac anatomy and the anatomy of the Hilum and chest wall.
  • Carry out treatment of injuries to the Heart, including opening the pericardium, control of bleeding, and internal massage.
  • Understand the management of the post-operative patient including internal defibrillation, drainage and closing the chest.
