Description This course brings together a variety of topics concerning the aging population in dentistry. Lecturers who are experts within their field of practice will provide an insight into the effects on the aging dentition. Build awareness and confidence in treating the older patient, discuss issues such as consent, treatment planning, endodontics, toothwear and the progression of periodontal disease.

A selection of vegetarian/non vegetarian options will be made available, however please be aware that we are unable to cater for special dietary requirements such as Gluten Free, Nut Allergy, Vegan. We therefore suggest that delegates bring their own food if you have a specialist requirement.

Sarra Jawad is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester Dental Hospital. She has a varied clinical background, having worked in Community Dentistry, General Practice and the Hospital Services.

Mr Faizan Zaheer teaches on the periodontology MSc programme

Maureen Halford is a qualified nurse and has has taught in Further and Higher Education and in the Prison Service. She has also been a Lead Trainer for the Alzheimer’s Society is now an independent trainer.

Peter Clarke is currently a specialist registrar in restorative dentistry and has extensive experience in treatment planning in more complex cases and the older generation.

Aims

Sarra Jawad -Age-related changes to dentition - focusing on tooth wear and tooth loss

To raise awareness on the effect of aging on the teeth, and to look at treatment options for clinical scenarios, such as worn teeth, partial and complete tooth loss.

Faizan Zaheer - The progression of periodontal disease in the older patient

To explore the features of periodontal disease onset and progression

Maureen Halford - Consent, the mental capacity act and their practical application

To provide training for members of the dental team on the Mental Capacity Act (MCA), including the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS);

Peter Clarke - Endodontics and the Ageing Dentition

To empower delegates to feel more confident undertaking endodontic treatment in this population group.

Objectives

Sarra Jawad - Age- related changes to dentition, focusing on tooth wear and tooth loss

  • Be familiar with causes of tooth loss
  • Understand what treatment modalities are available for tooth loss and the impact of life expectancy
  • Understand the impact of edentulism on quality of life and how this can be improved

Faizan Zaheer - The progression of periodontal disease in the older patient 

To examine the:-

  • Etiology of periodontal disease
  • Role of risk factors
  • Role of therapy role of supportive therapy
  • Prognostic evaluation of teeth

Maureen Halford - Consent, the mental capacity act and their practical application

  • Define the terms Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty
  • Describe the core principles of the MCA.
  • Understand how mental capacity is assessed
  • Understand the application of MCA and DoLS to dental related scenarios.

Peter Clarke  - Endodontics and the Ageing Dentition

Review the:- 

  • Biology of dental ageing.
  • Impact of the restorative cycle on this process.
  • Principle challenges theses teeth present.

To develop strategies to overcome these challenges with consideration to diagnosis, treatment planning, access, instrumentation and restoration of the compromised tooth

Delegates will understand the principles of the MCA, and its impact on the dental team for safeguarding vulnerable patients and the process of assessment of capacity to consent to treatment.
