Aims

The presentation aims to provide an overview of some key health inequalities in relation to ethnicity. It will also and to consider cultural context how mental health distress in ethnic minority communities may present itself and be understood or perceived by health professionals and ancillary staff in service providing organisations.

Objectives

To

  • gain greater understanding of health inequalities and ethnic minority communities
  • gain understanding of how ethnic minority experience of inequity in accessing health services and cultural factors may impact on their presentation of mental health issues
  • signpost professionals to available resources and support
Learning outcomes
  • A basic understanding of the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) and the health inequalities duties in relation to ethnicity and service provision.
  • A basic understanding of cultural context and its relationship to ethnic minority mental health issues
  • Increased confidence in reaching out with empathy and understanding to ethnic minority clients and signposting them to support and resources
