This course has been specifically developed to meet the needs of dental professionals and to comply with guidance from the CQC, Resuscitation Council and the GDC. Candidates will be awarded an EFA first aid certificate. This course is especially suitable for the “nominated first aider in the practice”.

This bespoke course has been compiled with the need of dental professionals in mind and also focuses on medical emergencies and the use of emergency equipment within the practice including the use of drugs.

Aims

The aim of this course is to educate delegates in the principles of First Aid and medical emergencies including:

  • Basic life support-Adult, Child & AED
  • Airway management & use of oxygen
  • Control of bleeding
  • Fractures
  • Causes of unconsciousness
  • Treatment of burns & scalds
  • Major/minor illnesses & the use of emergency drugs & IM injection technique
  • Risk assessments
  • Use of emergency equipment within the practice
Objectives

Once trained, successful candidates will be deemed competent to carry out the duties of an Emergency First Aider at work in a dental practice known as ‘the appointed person’ for the purposes of the Health & Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981. In addition, this course will also cover the use of emergency drugs and emergency equipment available in the dental practice.

Once competence has been assessed and this qualification awarded, the candidate will have demonstrated:

  • All the skills to properly assess/diagnose major conditions & injuries
  • Management in a simulated environment treatment of a casualty with various medical conditions/emergencies and give appropriate treatment within the parameters of their knowledge & training until more skilled personnel assume responsibility
  • Team/scene management skills
  • Knowledge of appropriate drug use for medical emergencies
  • The safe & effective use of emergency resuscitation equipment
