This session will provide information in the prevalence of oral cancer at both local and national level. The importance of prevention and early detection and the role of the primary care team in recognising the trigger signs for urgent referral will be examined. Presentations given by nationally and internationally recognised speakers will provide guidance on patient consultation and management; how to refer and utilise the oral cancer toolkit in practice.

All Cheshire & Merseyside dental practices are invited to attend

  • A guide for improving oral cancer survival rates in Cheshire and Merseyside via prevention and early detection.
Objectives

Raise/refresh awareness of:

  • The prevalence and incidents of oral cancer on a local and national level.
  • The importance of prevention and early detection.
  • Trigger signs and symptoms for an urgent ‘Two Week’ referral.
  • The principles and practice regarding patient consultation and management.
  • Good-practice guidance on how to make an urgent ‘Two Week’ referral.
  • The aims and application of the local guide and national toolkits.
Learning outcomes

Course participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on their role in the prevention and early detection of oral cancer and how to support a patient when a two week referral is required.
  • Utilise the oral cancer guide in their practice setting.
