Aims

To comprehensively summarise the current evidence base for the prevention of caries in adult patients. The session will also discuss the new Enhanced Caries Prevention for Adults document.

Objectives
  • Summarise the most update date evidence on preventing caries in adult patients.
  • Discuss the evidence base for fluoride as part of adult caries prevention.
  • Explain alternative topical preventive therapies such as silver diamine fluoride and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate
  • Signpost delegates to the Enhanced Caries Prevention for Adults document.
Learning outcomes

Following the session delegates will be able to:

  • discuss the up-to-date guidance on fluoride toothpaste, topical fluoride varnish and mouthwash
  • describe alternative topical preventive therapies that are available
  • describe the indications for silver diamine fluoride
  • discuss the benefits of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate and in which patients this would be a helpful adjunct
  • prescribe relevant preventative measures to high risk patients.
