SubjectSuppoRTT (Supported Return to Training)
DescriptionThe introduction of children, eldercare, family health issues, or a move following on partner’s work, introduces many new struggles, questions and dilemmas for dual-career couples. At the heart of this transition is the question for a new season of life: ‘How are we going to make this work?’ This course aims to help you navigate this time and feel a greater sense of control and clarity in how you shape the next season of your life and work (especially for dual career couples or anyone following a major life transition).
Additional information

This course has been designed for supported return to training trainees only who are due to return or have recently returned to Training. Please DO NOT book if you do not meet this criteria.

The workshop is led by Ryan Offutt, a work psychologist (MSc, University of Sheffield) who has helped trainee doctors in the Yorkshire and Humber region since 2010. Ryan is a faculty member at Leeds University and also teaches at Leeds University Medical School.

Feedback from a GP trainee on a virtual course:

‘Ryan was an was an incredibly positive, uplifting and encouraging individual at a time when I needed it! He talked about interesting and helpful points that were both accessible and relatable. The structure of the day was excellent and I enjoyyed both the theoretical and practical sides of the day. He made the breakout rooms easy to be part of and participate in. I would highly recommend this to other trainees – it has been invaluable.’

Aims

This course helps returning trainees transition from life with an ‘independent’ career in medicine to an ‘interdependent’ career due to the arrival of new children, life changes or increases in care responsibilities.

The course focuses in particular on the work/life challenges that this moment presents, including being part of a dual-career couple, helping trainees sustain their progress and development throughout this busy season of life, and using revision and exam prep techniques that are the most time-efficient and effective methods for busy professionals to squeeze into their demanding schedules.

Objectives

The challenges of returning to work;

The latest research on dual-career couples and practical insights we can use;

Models of engagement and stress at work, and how they help us understand our experience of work;

The latest research into time poverty and attention;

Environmental, contextual, and social factors that affect our focus;

The latest learning science and how it applies to trainee medical professionals;

Research on behaviour change and how it can help trainees.

The content is delivered in a mix of interactive short talks, small group conversations, practical exercises putting theory and ideas into practice, guided self-coaching activities and action planning.

Learning outcomes

After the course, delegates will be able to:

Have healthier conversations with their partner about the new demands of being a dual-career couple, with more fairness and candour, and with new concepts and findings from research on dual-career couples to help them navigate this complex season of life.

Get clear about the practical constraints (environmental, time, attention, focus) that limit your ability to do your work, and find solutions that work for you.

Make a plan for creating the right time, context and boundaries for your development and revision that fits your unique circumstances.

Replace less-efficient revision practices, with evidence-supported, time-efficient revision practices that save time and are more effective for knowledge retrieval in work and in exams.

Sustain motivation and progress on long-term projects (like revision and CPD) that are rarely urgent but always important. Also, use evidence-based techniques to bounce back after a dip.
