Radiography and Radiation Protection, AND Disinfection and Decontamination (PO180319 whole day CPD)

AvailabilityCourse has taken place
SubjectCore - Radiology
DescriptionRadiography and radiation protection – for non-radiography qualified members of the dental team (not dentists). - This course will provide an update in IRR17 and IR(ME)R18 for IRMER operators (i.e. DCPs) who are not qualified to take radiographs. IR(ME)R operators should be aware that IRR99, and IR(ME)R 2000 and its 2006 and 2011 amendments have been updated, and this course will help learners understand the new regulations and changes: IRR17 replaced IRR99 from 01 January 2018 IR(MER)18 replaced both the original IR(ME)R 2000 and the amendments from 2006 and 2011 from 06 February 2018. The course will also cover Disinfection and Decontamination in the Dental Surgery, the GDC highly recommend that you do at least 5 hours of verifiable CPD in this topic in every CPD cycle. Aims

The aim of this course is to provide continuing education and training in all aspects of dental radiology as part of life-long learning for operators who carry out all or part of the practical aspects associated with a radiographic examination.

Plus

Disinfection and decontamination and its role reducing the occurrence of infectious diseases in the dental surgery.

Objectives

Radiography and Radiation Protection

1. To explain the principles of radiation physics and the risks of ionising radiation in dental radiology.

2. To consider radiation doses in dental radiography and factors affecting dose.

3. To consider the principles of radiation protection.

4. To provide information on the requirements of quality assurance systems, medico-legal dental radiology, record keeping and clinical audit.

Disinfection and Decontamination in the Dental Surgery

1. To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document.

2. To examine the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry.

3. To discuss infection risk reduction.

4. To describe the control of Legionellae in the dental practice.

5. To discuss the safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector as specified in the HTM 01-07 guidance document.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

Radiography and Radiation Protection

1. Describe the fundamentals of radiation physics, and the risk/benefits and biological effects of radiation, so as to demonstrate knowledge of hazard associated with exposure.

2. Summarise the factors affecting radiation doses received by patients and staff in dental radiology, and outline attendant quality assurance systems, so as to demonstrate theoretical ability to minimise risks and ensure the consistent quality of radiographs.

3. Outline general points of current UK legislation and guidance governing the use of ionising radiation in dentistry, so as to demonstrate awareness of statutory responsibilities.

4. Summarise the principles of radiation protection, so as to demonstrate theoretical ability regarding the safe use of radiographs in dental practice.

5. Recognise and describe key aspects of radiography quality assurance framework, so as to implement effective strategies in own practice.

Disinfection and Decontamination in the Dental Surgery

1. Describe and summarise key stages of the decontamination process, and implement effective infection control procedures to reduce the risks of cross-infection.

2. Outline essential and best quality requirements of the HTM 01-05 guidelines, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.

3. Demonstrate recognition of effective measures to manage the risk of physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the practice of dentistry.

4. Outline effective strategies for safely maintaining dental unit waterlines.

5. Summarise the key issues relating to waste disposal in dental practice, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.
