Sonia practices as a Dental Hygienist in Torquay, she also teaches & lectures across the country for Dental Post Graduate Deaneries, BSDHT, BDA and private companies. She is also happy to deliver core subjects in general practice. Sonia is an examiner for the NEBDN and is FAA NUCO level 3 qualified to deliver BLS & AED training and Safecert level 3 qualified to deliver SOVA and Child Protection training.

Aims

The aim of this course is to update learners on their knowledge of the most common disease in the western world, dental caries, and to provide information on dental anomalies that may be seen in a patient’s mouth. It will provide information on the role of plaque and an update on oral health promotion and how this can be implemented in practice.

Objectives

1. To review the current thinking on caries, plaque and prevention of caries

2. To look at how bacteria plaque is formed, how a bio-film works and its links to systemic disease

3. To examine the signs and symptoms of caries and dental anomalies seen in a patient’s mouth

4. To discuss preventative measures and treatments and achievable oral health messages and techniques

5. Describe the ways that oral health promotion can be implemented in practice

Learning outcomes

Following this course Learners will be able to :

1. Describe and summarize the key points relating to the signs and symptoms of caries.

2. Describe the ionic see saw

3. Explain how a cavity occurs and describe its progression through the various stages.

4. List common dental anomalies.

5. Describe how plaque is formed and its links to systemic diseases

6. Recognize dental anomalies in your working environment and be able to discuss these with colleagues

7. Describe preventive measures for caries and feel confident to discuss oral health with patients.

9. Promote good oral health techniques
