DescriptionRadiography and Radiation Protection - Radiography and radiation protection –for non-radiography qualified members of the dental team (not dentists). This course will provide an update in IRR17 and IR(ME)R18 for IRMER operators (i.e. DCPs) who are not qualified to take radiographs. IR(ME)R operators should be aware that IRR99, and IR(ME)R 2000 and its 2006 and 2011 amendments have been updated, and this course will help learners understand the new regulations and changes: IRR17 replaced IRR99 from 01 January 2018 IR(MER)18 replaced both the original IR(ME)R 2000 and the amendments from 2006 and 2011 from 06 February 2018. Aims

To deliver an overview of ionising radiation and the radiation protection rules that govern radiography in dentistry, for DCPs to gain the understanding that the GDC recommends.

Objectives

By the end of the session you should be able to:

• Outline the main components of the updated Ionising Radiation Regulations IRR 2017 and IR(ME)R 2018

• Identify the impact of this legislation on General Dental Practice

• Describe the nature and effects of ionising radiation

• List and describe the types of radiobiological damage that can occur to the body

• List properties of x-rays

• Identify considered best practice

• Explain the purpose of taking certain types of radiographs (selection criteria) and describe what we look for on them

• Describe what Quality Assurance is and list appropriate Quality Control measures

• Discuss the faults found on films by developing and processing errors

• Interpret different types of radiograph

Learning outcomes

• DCPs will have completed a questionnaire, taken part in Q&A sessions and group work and made notes to complement their learning.

• DCPs will have gained new knowledge and/or revised previous knowledge on radiography and radiation protection within their place of work.

• DCPs will be able to update any policies within their place of work that are governed by the GDC and CQC.
