DescriptionStaff having any contact with children should receive child protection training every 3 years, as a minimum. The aim of this course is to meet this requirement, and to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in promoting the safety and well-being of children at risk of abuse.

This course is suitable for the entire practice team to gain an understanding of what child protection is and to recognise the types of child abuse indicators they may see in their place of work

Aims

To provide information about the different forms of child abuse and neglect , including what constitutes child maltreatment

Objectives
  1. Recognise and outline the different forms of child maltreatment, and the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, so as to identify when a child or young person may be at risk of harm
  2. Demonstrate ability to use referral mechanisms and share information appropriately, including who to contact, where to access advice and how to report
  3. Demonstrate an ability to recognise and describe a significant event in child protection/safeguarding to the most appropriate professional or local team
Learning outcomes

By the end of the session you should –

  • List the categories of child abuse
  • Be able to identify possible indicators of child abuse
  • Know how to respond if a child confides in you/discloses information that prompts you to suspect abuse
  • Know how to make a referral to children’s social care
  • Understand the need for good record keeping and documentation
