Aims

Overall aim:

To develop excellence in the delivery of patient care.

Specific aims:

1. To provide a critical overview of clinical governance as it applies to the NHS in the UK.

2. To increase understanding of the CQC's Fundamental Standards and inspection regime.

3. To improve the assessment of patients’ orthodontic needs in relation to appropriate referral for diagnosis, advice and treatment using the Index of Orthodontic treatment Need (IOTN).

Objectives

1. To explain the framework for quality assurance on the NHS.

2. To describe how clinical effectiveness, learning effectiveness and risk management underpin clinical governance.

3. To explain the role of the CQC in the care sector.

4. To examine the CQC’s key lines of enquiry and explore the fundamental standards.

5. To explain IOTN and selection criteria for orthodontic referral.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Identify own role in clinical governance and quality improvement activities.

2. Discuss the principles, values and components of clinical governance, and apply them in practice.

3. Outline how the CQC ensures quality care.

4. List the CQC’s five key lines of enquiry and illustrate how the requirements can be met.

5. Use IOTN to refer patients for orthodontic treatment appropriately and within time standards.
