DescriptionThis course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an Introduction to primary care NHS dentistry – essential for dentists undertaking Performers List Validation by Equivalence (PLVE). This course is also suitable for other dentists who are new to the NHS, dentists returning to NHS practice, and any dental professional interested in learning more about the featured topics.

Aims

Specific aims:

1. To improve the practical application of the principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a dentist in the NHS.

2. To bring learners up-to-date with employment law in the dental practice environment.

Objectives

1. To provide training on the NHS Charges Regulations, including the pitfalls and controls.

2. To review NICE guidance on oral and dental health.

3. To analyse the care pathway approach.

4. To examine associate contracts, and other financial, business and contractual aspects of employment law affecting dental professionals and practices.

5. To illustrate principles of staff recruitment and employment law using dental practice employment policies and procedures.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Rationalise the NHS Charges Regulations and mitigate the risk of falling foul of dental service regulators.

2. Use evidence-based guidance in clinical decision making.

3. Use the care pathway approach to encourage patients to take responsibility for protecting and maintaining their own oral health.

4. Identify aspects of employment law that can be avoided, so as to minimise potential problems from occurring.

5. Use practice employment policies to handle employment law situations.
