Theory of Medical Emergencies in the Primary Care Dental setting with Practical Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator Training (OX060220)

Lynn is a Registered General Nurse and has many years of experience as a senior Resuscitation Officer for a large NHS teaching hospital and as an intensive and coronary care nurse.

-In 2014 Lynn was a lead lecturer for the BDA annual conference on anaphylaxis and which became on-line BDA course from 2014 until 2019. She also lectured on medical emergency drugs at the BDA Dentistry show May 2018.

-Lynn is owner, consultant and instructor for ResusPlus Training where she teaches medical emergencies and resuscitation to in-house Dental and GP Practices, University and Oxford Dental Deanery.

-She regularly provides one day, adult +/- paediatric, Immediate Life Support courses for the conscious sedation Dental teams at the Horton Hospital and also to in-house courses.

-She is accredited by the resuscitation council (UK) as both an advanced adult, and an advanced paediatric life support instructor.

-Lynn is considered to be a stimulating and professional speaker and instructor.

This course is intended for the entire practice team : Dentists, DCP's and Dental Receptionists. Delegates will have demonstrated to the instructor that they can confidently provide BLS to a casualty in their place of work. They will have worked with colleagues to demonstrate good team work to deliver oxygen and a shock to the heart using the emergency equipment they have to hand.

Registration is 09:00 with the educational programme starting at 09:15. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and please email the course tutor/facilitator amanda.evans@hee.nhs.uk if you have any dietary or access requirements at least 1 week prior to the course. This course finishes at 16:30.

The aim of this course is to develop the learner's ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies - adults and paediatrics - in the primary care dental Setting.

1. To provide training in how to perform an urgent care assessment of an ill patient.

2. To outline the processes and procedures to recognise, manage and where required provide, basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies.

3. To outline the emergency drugs and equipment that should be held by dental surgeries.

4. To explain the team approach to medical emergencies.

1. Identify medical emergencies which are beyond own scope of management, so as refer with an appropriate degree of urgency when necessary.

2. Recognise, manage and provide basic  and immediate life support for medical emergencies in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

3. Identify, prescribe and administer - where appropriate - emergency drugs correctly.

4. Facilitate a team approach to medical emergencies so as to deal promptly with uncommon but potentially tragic events.By the end of the session you will be able to –

· Explain and demonstrate the ABC (DE) process

· Demonstrate good chest compressions and rescue breaths on a dummy

· Be able to confidently use the oxygen and equipment to deliver breaths to a casualty

· Demonstrate a good understanding of how an AED works and show the instructor how you would use it on a casualty

· List the drugs needed for a medical emergency and describe their mode of action
