DescriptionThis day event is organised for the whole dental team to raise awareness of oral and skin cancer. The dental team see patients regularly and are thereofre in an ideal position to screen their patients for early signs of cancer. This enables early referral, diagnosis and treatment with better outcomes for their patients.

Aims
  • To highlight the importance of regular screening and health promotion in oral cancer prevention 
  • To discuss aetiology and epidemiology of oral cancer 
  • To describe oral lesions that may need fast track referral and explain the appropriate pathway for urgent referrals 
  • To highlight key features of skin lesions that may be premalignant/malignant 
  • To differentiate between different skin cancers
Objectives

By the end of the day delegates will have a good understanding of:

  • The aetiology of oral and skin cancer and the importance of screening and health promotion 
  • The method of referring their patients in a timely and appropriate way for urgent consultation 
  • Communication strategies for dealing with sensitive issues 
  • What treatment options may be offered to their patients
