Lecturer profile
Dr Brian Edlin grew up in Glasgow and qualified from Glasgow University as a dentist in 1971. He then worked at the Royal London Hospital as a Resident House Surgeon in Oral Surgery before moving to Manchester where he worked in both private and NHS practice for 28 years. During Brian’s practising career in Manchester he also worked as a Clinical Assistant in Oral Surgery at the local district hospital. Brian has been a member of the Manchester LDC for 28 years and was Vice Chairman of his LDC until his retirement from NHS practice. He remains a co-opted member of the LDC.
Brian joined Dental Protection initially as a Dento-Legal Adviser in 1995 and was appointed Head of Dental Services in 2008 based at Dental Protection’s Leeds office until reaching a certain age! Brian now works for Dental Protection three days a week as a Senior Cases Consultant, dealing with the more challenging and complex cases in the UK, Ireland and Israel. Brian continues to lecture extensively both at home and overseas.

Dr Caroline Pankhurst is a dentist and Specialist in Oral Microbiology and has published extensively in the fields of oral medicine, oral microbiology, and dental unit waterlines including two books on infection control - “Control of Infection Guidelines for General Dental Practice” & “Basic Guide to Prevention and Infection Control in Dentistry” the second edition to be published in 2016. She is actively involved in postgraduate dental education and was a finalist in the e- Learning Awards 2012. Caroline was on the Editorial Boards of “Primary Dental Care” & BMC Oral Health, and was President of BDA Metropolitan Branch in 2006. She served 2 terms on the SAC in Medical Microbiology (Royal College of Pathologists). She is currently an elected member on the BDA Central Committee for Dental Academic Staff & Council BDA Metropolitan Branch; and a Trustee of the charity the Fungal Infection Trust.
