Aims

To increase awareness of the problems that dentists can encounter when managing older patients.

Objectives

By the end of the course you should:

  • Be aware of how age and age-related disease can impact on the provision of dental care for older people
  • To include the risks associated with the use of bisphosphonates
  • Understand evidence-based strategies for the prevention and management of caries in he older person
  • Understand the risks of polypharmacy and xerostomia in the older person and their management
  • Understand the bi-directional relationships between oral health and nutrition particularly in the older patient
