Aims

To equip dental nurses with the necessary skills to enable them to press the button for dental radiographs on behalf of the dentist, who sets the exposure parameters and positions the patient. It does not provide sufficient training for dental nurses to set exposures or position patients.

Objectives
  • Provide information on ionising radiation, its sources, hazards, risks and typical does in the UK.
  • Give basic radiation protection information relating to working with dental x-rays.
  • Introduce and explain relevant requirements of the ionising radiations regulations 1999 and the ionising radiation (medical exposures) regulations 2000 (IRMER)
  • Provide the radiation safety aspects of training for dental nurses wishing to act as “operators” under the terms of IRMER.
  • Discuss the role, duties and responsibilities of operators making dental exposures.
