Aims

The aim of this short course is to provide two and a half hours instruction/revision in radiography and radiation protection for DCPs who work within surgeries/practices where dental radiography is performed. Whilst not being fully trained operators (in that they will not hold a Certificate in Dental Radiography as defined in the IRMER 2000 Regulations) they may be called upon to perform operator tasks in the course of their daily work.

Objectives

1. Radiation Risk:

a. Revise the nature of the hazards associated with ionising radiation.

b. Enable all members of the Dental team to understand the need to protect both themselves and their patients.

2. Physics:

a. Revise the construction and operation of the intra-oral X-ray set so that DCPs:

(i) Understand the need for safe operator position selection.

(ii) Understand the hazards presented by equipment failure such as oil-leaks and timer failure.

3. Statutory Regulation:

Revise the relevant parts of IRR99 and IRMER2000 so that DCPs understand their statutory responsibilities under both sets of regulations.
