Aims

To discuss a number of different types of dental pain, and to help delegates to appreciate that diagnosis and management of dental pain can be very logical if a systematic approach is adopted when taking a pain history.

Objectives

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • To discuss the clinical presentation of a number of different causes of odontogenic pain that may present in general practice. Common non-odontogenic causes of oro-facial pain will also be briefly mentioned.
  • To briefly discuss the underlying physiology that underpins the patient’s symptoms.
  • To discuss the appropriate clinical management of a patient with dental pain, including when it may be necessary to refer the patient to a secondary care setting.
