DescriptionThis course is an interactive lecture delivered by a dual qualified dentist and criminal barrister. This course will explain the complaint processes and how best to handle issues in a way to avoid allegations going before the GDC.

Speaker – Rashpal Mondair

Qualified BDS 1989 from Liverpool University. After vocational training worked as an associate in general practice until opening own practice from a squat. Studied for the Diploma in law. Completed the Bar course and was called to the Bar in 1995. Worked as a criminal barrister from Chambers and continued with own dental practice part time. Spent 3 years in Australia where served in the Australian Army. G.D.C. Investigating committee member ( 2010-2014). Just completing a M.Sc. in General Dental Practice at Birmingham. Currently work part time at Birmingham Dental Hospital as a clinical demonstrator to final year students and in legal practice undertaking a range of legal work including regulatory, criminal, medical/dental negligence.

What is a complaint?

  • This course will explore best practice in complaint handling and will explain the many processes involved from a dento-legal point of view.

General Dental Council

  • What will the GDC do?
  • What is the fitness to practice process?
  • Explain the early stages of a complaint and case examiners
  • Investigating Committee - how do they meet, what do they do, what are their powers and what are the standards of proof?
  • Discuss the evidence dentists can put before the committee.
  • Explain the effects of remediation on a GDC case.
  • Practice committees- what are they, how do they meet and what powers do they have?
  • Discuss the burdens and standards of proof.
  • Do you have to give evidence?
  • How to survive cross-examination.
  • Explain convictions and how the GDC views them.
