Aims
  • To reinforce awareness of current legislation relating to the GDC scope of practice for dental therapists and hygienists.
  • To give delegates the opportunity to discuss “grey areas” within the GDC’s scope of practice, current changes in legislation and the changes with regard to direct access.
Objectives
  • Give an overview of the medico-legal issues arising from the GDC scope of practice.
  • Document the importance of the scope of practice for therapists and hygienists and explore the limitations and expectations of duties.
  • Realise the importance of communication via record keeping between the prescribing dentist and the therapist/hygienist.
  • Develop skills to produce a course of treatment ensuring best patient care at all times.
  • Understand the changes relating to direct access and how this affects dental therapists and hygienists in their role in general dental practice
