DescriptionIllicit drug abuse is a growing problem that may affect our patients. This short seminar discusses the most popular recreational drugs, addresses why people use them and why it is important that dental professionals understand patient management and dental effects. Drug classifications are explained and common interactions and side effects with dental care, highlighted. Effective communication with addicts to establish consent is discussed together with the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of addiction.
Additional information

Solvent abuse, PCP, GHB, Heroin, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, LSD, Cannabis will be discussed (no samples given!) highlighting common interaction to dental treatments and patient behaviour concerns that professionals have.

Aims

This short seminar aims to highlight the difference between a number of illicit drugs used within the population; also addressing how personal use would affect professional registration.

Objectives

By the end of the session delegates will understand current terminology and recognise the signs and symptoms of a variety of recreational drug use and be able to effectively manage patient communication and care.
