Aims

To discuss how we manage challenging behaviours in practice, and how to recognise factors that lead to difficulties accepting dental care.

Objectives
  • Cover physical, behavioural and cognitive needs that affect a patient’s ability to accept dental treatment, including for routine examinations
  • Discuss methods of behavioural management (including reasonable adjustments, social stories, patient passports) and progressive desensitisation to aid patient’s ability to accept treatment, including other adjuncts like hypnosis, acupressure and acupuncture
  • Discuss individual trusts policies on behaviour management (eg clinical holding and restraint policy)
Learning outcomes
  • Identity patients requiring additional behavioural management interventions
  • Formulate treatment plans based on patient’s individual needs including behaviour management interventions
  • Implement their trust’s policies on behaviour management
