Aims

To provide an overview of the provision of inhalation sedation (IHS) with nitrous oxide and oxygen for dental care in children.

Objectives

• Update of theory and pharmacology of nitrous oxide sedation • Practical tips on the use of IHS in children, including assessment • Governance and sustainability surrounding IHS

Learning outcomes

Understand the historical background and theoretical basis for the use of nitrous oxide in IHS

-Understand the practical aspects of using nitrous oxide for IHS, including indications and contraindications to use

- Understand updates to the current guidelines in conscious sedation for dentistry including clinical governance and sustainability regarding use of nitrous oxide
