DescriptionThis two day course has been developed for dental nurses to measure and record plaque indices, apply topical fluoride varnish and deliver OH messages to a range of patients. It is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge, underpinned with clinical competency and at the end of the course all delegates will reach a safe beginner level.

Applicants must be GDC registered.

Attendance at both sessions are mandatory.

The practical skills for this competency will be achieved

through the support, training, advice, and observation from

a GDC registered Dentist or Hygiene Therapist who will act

as the Dental Nurse work-based clinical supervisor

Aims

Provide theoretical knowledge & practical skills required for

a dental nurse to competently measure & record plaque

indices & apply topical fluoride to patients on prescription

from a dentist

Objectives
  • Discuss the purpose of recording plaque to meet disease

risk assessment and establish patient pathways for

prevention.

  • Explain the aetiology and nature of dental caries and

describe the mechanisms of fluoride in caries prevention.

  • Describe the process and procedure of safely applying

topical fluoride varnish. Identify and use current guidance

documents to support patients in disease prevention

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session dental nurses will be able to

apply learning to clinical competencies; applying fluoride

varnish to the prescription of a dentist, measuring and

recording plaque indices, and deliver key oral health

messages to patients to support disease prevention.
