Aims

To cover issues relating to consent and communication within special care dentistry including the mental capacity act, equality act and the concept of reasonable adjustments

Objectives

To review principles relating to consent of the special care patient in particular relating to the mental capacity act, equality act and the concept of reasonable adjustment

To discuss the barriers faced by special care patients accessing care

To discuss communication within special care dentistry, especially those with significant communication difficulties (including BSL and Makaton)

Learning outcomes

Apply the principles of relevant legislation (including the Mental Capacity Act and Equality Act) to gain informed consent for treatment in those with additional needs

Identify suitable methods to aid communication for those with communication difficulties

Work more confidently with patients, families and carers when obtaining consent.
