Aims

To provide an overview of behaviour management techniques including CBT and behaviour change conversations to enable effective dental care in anxious children and young people.

Objectives

Understand how you can use behaviour change models to assess patient motivation and readiness to change

To learn how cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) fits in with other techniques for managing dental anxiety

Introduce strategies to reduce anxiety in children who need dental care including non pharmacological behaviour management

Learning outcomes

Have a structured approach to having a behaviour change conversation with parents.

To be familiar with the Sheffield CBT resource “Your Teeth You Are in Control".

Be aware of resources to help reduce anxiety.

Understand the importance of bitewing radiographs in the diagnosis of caries and techniques to enable these to be completed in anxious children
