Additional information

Susan Kindelan is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry and treats large numbers of patients with autism. She has a special interest in improving our management of children with autism and is currently developing the use of social stories for autistic patients in Leeds CDS.

Siobhan Harnett is a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. She completed a Clinical Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry, with thesis entitled "Improving Access and Reducing Barriers to Dental Care for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder". As part of the research she developed a dental application for smart phones and tablet devices, aimed specifically for children with ASD.

Aims
  • To develop an understanding of Autistic Spectrum Disorder and an awareness of the interdisciplinary approach to management.
  • To develop an awareness of the difficulties encountered by parents and carers of children with autistic spectrum disorder
  • To have an understanding of helpful behaviour management approaches in the dental surgery for children with autistic spectrum discorder
  • To have knowledge about dental social stories for patients with autistic spectrum disorder
  • To obtain information about an electronic app designed to help children with autism access dental care
  • To discuss dental care under general anaesthesia for children with autism; the rationale and improving the experience
Objectives

 By the end of the course delegates will: 

  • Have an increased understanding and awareness of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and how to manage children with ASD.
  • Delegates will be introduced to the recently developed and innovative app deigned to help children with autism in the dental environment.
  • Delegates will have an increased awareness of the use dental social stories for children with ASD.
