DescriptionIt is not intended for Experienced Trainers. This course is only open to prospective GP Trainers who have been accepted onto the trainer pathway. This is one of the mandatory courses that need to be completed. Teaching the consultation: This course will give guidance on how to teach the consultation to a GP trainee and how to use the toolkit resource that is available to all trainers. Trainees in Difficulty: This course will give you an understanding of the difficulties that some trainees may experience whilst undertaking GP Training. The course will help you spot the signs that a trainee may be struggling, outline how to document these concerns and will discuss the help and support available to you.

Aims
  • Who is a trainee in difficulty?
  • How do we identify them?
  • How do we manage them?
  • Introduction to consultation skills teaching for the GP trainer
  • Resources which may be helpful with this
  • Teaching trainees to explore ICE effectively and how to spot cues
  • How to encourage exploring psycho-social aspects of the consultation
Objectives

We will look at reasons for common problems, case studies, and helpful techniques to use while training. The importance of documentation and sharing information and concerns with the trainee and the wider educational team will also be covered.

Learning outcomes

You will complete the course with training ideas, an awareness of where to look for resources and support, and hopefully the confidence to embrace the challenges these trainees can bring.
