DescriptionThis three day programme, split across three months is designed to help you better understand yourself, others and the NHS. It’s designed specifically for doctors in postgraduate training and will improve your ability to lead others, work effectively with others and get things done. Come ready to participate, engage and enquire – this is not a lecture programme.

There will be a small amount of pre programme work before each of the programme days – these will be conversations for you to have with people in your systems which will increase your insights and connections into the wider NHS.

Aims

Doctors are trained thoroughly in clinical care. Many of them find themselves either advanced in their training or in Consultant/ GP roles with little understanding of the rest of the job – being an effective leader able to develop services for patients. We’ll take your clinical expertise as a given and focus on the rest.

Objectives
  • To increase your understanding of the NHS and how it operates
  • To give insight into organisational culture and your role in co-creating that
  • To increase your understanding of the role and characteristics of effective medical leadership
  • To increase your understanding of yourself and others at a behavioural level and learn how to increase flexibility
  • To consider how you work within a team
  • To develop your ability to co-create robust decisions
  • To increase your repertoire of methods for influencing others
  • To understand your approach to conflict and extend your options for handling conflict
  • To explore your role in supervising and appraising others
  • To consider how to sustain your learning
Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to;

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of why leadership and team working are important in their role as a clinician
  2. Understand why the NHS promotes, inclusive, kind and compassionate leadership
  3. Show an awareness of their leadership responsibilities as a clinician and understand why effective clinical leadership is central to safe and effective care
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of leadership principles, approaches and techniques and be able to apply them in practice
  5. Demonstrate appropriate leadership behaviours and an ability to adapt these to improve engagement and outcomes
  6. Appreciate their leadership style and its impact on others
  7. Actively participate and contribute to the work and success of a team (show an awareness of appropriate followership)
  8. Think critically about decision making, reflecting on decision making processes and explain those decisions to others in an honest and transparent way
  9. Supervising, challenging, influencing appraising and mentoring colleagues and peers to enhance performance and support development
  10. Critically appraise the performance of colleagues, peers and systems and understand when to escalate concerns
  11. Promote and effectively participate in multidisciplinary and interprofessional team working
  12. Appreciate roles of all team members of the multidisciplinary team
  13. Promote a just, open and transparent culture
