DescriptionThis interactive 2-day course covers a wide range of topics to help you improve as a teacher, trainer or facilitator! Topics covered include learning styles, designing and planning teaching, exploring different teaching styles and methods, assessment, evaluation and giving effective feedback. We also cover how to improve your use of technology in teaching through PowerPoint tips and using interactive mobile phone apps and websites. The course is highly participative and practical. Delegates will deliver a short teaching session on day 2 and will receive constructive feedback on their teaching and self-presentation skills. See the PDF in the Additional Information section for more details on this course. TRAINER BIO David Clegg has been delivering training for us since 2005. Prior to that he spent several years teaching, training and coaching in the Higher Education sector. David delivers engaging and interactive training sessions and encourages a friendly, positive and supportive training environment. Additional information

It is mandatory to attend both days of this course.  You cannot attend Day 2 if you have missed Day 1.

Please do not book this course if you have already booked/attended one of our other Teaching Skills courses (including Training the Trainers).

This is a practical and interactive course using a range of participative teaching methods including: presentations, individual tasks, small group discussions and activities, mobile phone apps.

Pre-Course Tasks:   There are no formal pre-course tasks, however delegates are asked to install 2 apps on to their phone / tablet that will be used on day one. Delegates are also asked to give some initial thought to the topic (which can be work or non-work related) they would like to teach on day two.

Aims

The course aims to help you improve as a teacher, trainer or facilitator.

Objectives

By the end of the 2 days participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • Consider key skills needed for effective teaching
  • Explore underpinning concepts of adult learning, feedback, evaluation and assessment techniques and how these can be built upon within medical/clinical education
  • Identify different styles of teaching and learning
  • Develop and practise strategies for planning and delivering effective teaching and training
  • Plan and deliver a short teaching session
  • Deliver and receive feedback on a short teaching session
  • Explore the use of Information Technology in teaching and training
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Understand and demonstrate some of the skills required to be an effective teacher or trainer Understand different types and methods of feedback, evaluation and assessment and how they relate to their own teaching and training
  • Identify different learning styles and teaching methods and adapt teaching and training to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Be aware of how to write effective aims, objective and outcomes, and how to plan a session to deliver them
  • Deliver a short training session and reflect on the feedback received
  • Demonstrate effective constructive feedback techniques when offering feedback to peers
  • Recognise and use a range of mobile phone apps and websites and evaluate when it may be appropriate to integrate them into their teaching and training
