SubjectSuppoRTT (Supported Return to Training)
DescriptionA virtual networking event for International Medical Graduate (IMG) doctors starting training in the Yorkshire and The Humber region in February 2023. GP Trainees who started in August 2022 and are starting their first secondary care placements in February 2023 are also welcome. The aim of these sessions is to set up a pilot of virtual networking events to support new IMG doctors in their transition into training and working in the NHS. Each session will be interactive with breakout rooms for trainees to engage with one another. Lectures and Q&A panels will be recorded but we would strongly encourage access to microphones and cameras during the breakout rooms sessions to maximise the opportunity for participants to speak to other IMG trainees.
Additional information

International medical graduates (IMGs) account for a significant proportion of the workforce in the NHS. According to the GMC, In 2020, over 10,000 IMGs joined the NHS medical workforce – more than UK and EEA graduates combined. IMGs starting a new post in the NHS are faced with unique and variable challenges. The NHS people plan 2020/2021 recommends a move to a more inclusive culture & service with the aim to increase patient safety and retain staff.

Since 2020, IMG trainees new to the NHS have been specifically included in the supported return to training programme (SuppoRTT). The needs of this group in their supported entry into NHS are complex and yet to be fully identified.

This is a pilot of virtual networking sessions held by the Leadership Fellow working with SuppoRTT to increase regional support for IMG trainees new to training or the NHS, these sessions hope to work towards identifying further gaps in supporting IMGs and creating a space for IMGs to engage with the SuppoRTT team.
