DescriptionMental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health in the same way as learning physical first aid. By choosing MHFA England training, you are joining England’s largest community of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®) and helping to improve the mental health of the nation. On your course you will gain the knowledge and skills to spot the signs of a person experiencing poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, the tools to signpost to appropriate support and help promote a more positive culture around mental health.
Additional information

This course has been designed for supported return to training trainees and for educational supervisors supporting returning trainees who are due to return or have recently returned to Training. Please DO NOT book if you do not meet this criteria.

Online bookings close 1 week prior to the course date but bookings can be made by emailing supportt.yh@hee.nhs.uk.

You can cancel your place online up to 1 week prior to the course, cancellations within the last week must be sent via email to supportt.yh@hee.nhs.uk

Once booked onto the course, you need to complete the online form before attending the session.

The course is an online two day course made up of a series of four interactive live sessions. Live sessions include group activities, case studies, discussion, and skills practice. They take place online via Zoom, and are accessed via enabley, our Online Learning Hub. The live sessions are led by an approved MHFA England Instructors. You must attend all live sessions in full to be certified as a Mental Health First Aider.

It is important to recognise that this course covers material which you may find emotionally triggering. Your self-care is important and your safety throughout is our priority.

Before the course, please consider identifying someone who could potentially support you during or after the course if you need it. You will need to have your camera on during live sessions. There will be clear opt-out points for learners who are not comfortable taking part in a particular activities and guidance on how to contact the Instructor Member during the session.

On completion, you will automatically receive three years’ access to the MHFAider Support App, alongside exclusive resources and online events. This on-going member support will increase your confidence and knowledge, and help you carry out your MHFAider role more effectively.

Aims

To help trainees to gain confidence in managing mental health issues on their return to work.

Objectives

Mental Health First Aiders are trained to:

- Spot the early signs and symptoms of mental ill health.

- Provide a supportive environment in which to discuss mental health issues.

- Listen non-judgementally.

- Understand what professional support or self-help strategies are available.

- Encourage colleagues / patients to access support if appropriate.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training sessions we expect trainees to be more confident in managing mental health issues on return to work.
