DescriptionNHS staff have the most difficult roles because we regularly work with people who are frightened, upset and anxious. These negative feelings are often projected outwardly and they affect us in an insidious way. We can absorb them and this has a detrimental effect on us, contaminating our work and home life causing burnout. This half day course you will learn how to be aware of when and why this is happening and how to consciously manage it. You will ask yourself 'Should I walk a mile in their shoes?'

This course has been designed for supported return to training trainees only who are due to return or have recently returned to Training. Please DO NOT book if you do not meet this criteria.

Aims

The aim of this course is to teach delegates to recognise when their wellbeing has been compromised by taking onboard their patients' distress and how to mitigate this.

Objectives

The specific objectives are:

To outline the concept of the Locus of Control

To explore how our emotions are formed and felt

To explain the concept of fear-based negative thinking

To understand and define empathy

To examine the effect of empathy on us and our patients

To explore the value of compassion in a therapeutic setting

To teach tools and techniques to minimise the negative impact of distressing situations on both clinician and patient

Learning outcomes

After the course you will have:

The ability to recognise when you are absorbing the emotions of others (empathy)

An understanding of the effects of empathy on both the patient and practitioner

The ability to unpack and process distressing situations

Reduced rumination about work
