DescriptionYour ST1 needs to do a clinical QI project. Your ST3 is wondering what to do for their Leadership project. What can they do that is educational and useful to patients and your practice? Enter Sustainable Quality improvement: an approach that integrates the principles of sustainable clinical healthcare to quality improvement. This course will explain how acting on the climate and ecological emergency through clinical practice can support patient and planetary health. We will look at practical examples and resources of useful QI projects that you can use with your trainees. We will include Respiratory QI examples that can improve the care of patients in a low-carbon way and help practices achieve points in the new GP contract as of October 2021.

Aims

Enable GP trainers to support their GP trainees to conduct QI projects that improve patient health outcomes whilst reducing the carbon footprint of care.

Objectives
  1. To describe the effects of the global environmental crisis on human health and the carbon hotspots in primary care.
  2. Explain how the principles of sustainable clinical practice (prevention, patient empowerment, lean systems and low-carbon alternatives) apply to evidence-based and person-centred clinical practice.
  3. Give examples of resources that enable trainers to support trainees to conduct practical, useful and effective Sustainable QI projects that support patient and planetary health (and can help practices achieve new GP contract points in the impact and innovation fund).
Learning outcomes

By the end of this session you will:

  1. Understand how action on the climate and ecological emergency results in huge co-benefits to human health
  2. Know where the carbon hotspots are in primary care and how to apply the principles of sustainable clinical practice to quality improvement.
  3. Have resources to support your trainees with practical sustainable QI projects.
