Description Are any of your trainees overseas graduates? This hands-on workshop is packed with practical ideas on how to give overseas trained doctors targeted linguistic and cultural communications advice at the same time as giving clinical feedback on consultations. This integrated approach should accelerate learning, and help to provide solutions to some of the common challenges that overseas trained doctors. In this workshop, facilitated by an experienced Language teacher who teaches in the Leeds University Dental School, you will watch mini-demonstrations and share practical teaching ideas. You will leave with a toolkit of ready-made activities for teaching language and cultural communication whilst at the same time as developing overseas trained doctors’ GP medical consultation skills.

Aims

To share practical ideas and experience on how to give feedback on the linguistic and cultural aspects of communication in GP consultations when working with overseas trainees.

Objectives

- To share practical ideas on ways to raise awareness of common language functions associated with patient-centered data gathering.

- To share practical ideas on how to enhance clarity when engaging in clinical management discussions with patients, including paying attention to intonation, word stress and pitch, as well as other strategies for enhancing clarity.

- To share strategies for softening the message using indirectness in UK healthcare consultations in order to maintain good interpersonal professional relationships with patients.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates should be:

- more aware of linguistic and cultural communications strategies for training overseas colleagues in GP consulting, with regard to data gathering, clinical management and demonstrating interpersonal skills.
