Aims

This course will update participants with the current risk factors associated with periodontal disease and introduce 'motivational interviewing' as a communication tool for DCP's, motivating patients to identify their own treatment and oral hygiene needs leading to sucessful treatment acceptance and outcomes.

Objectives
  1. To understand the reasons why some patients have an increased risk of periodontal disease, and with the aid of case studies, recognise varying treatments available for non-responding periodontal patients.
  2. To introduce 'motivational interviewing' as a technique to aid patients to recognise their own treatment needs to improve motivation.

 

Learning Outcomes: After the completed course the delegate will be able to....

  1. Describe reasons why some patients have an increased risk of periodontal disease.
  2. Outline different methods of risk assessment.
  3. Identify treatments available for patients who do not respond to periodontal treatment.
  4. Apply motivational interviewing to relevant clinical scenarios.
