DescriptionValid consent is necessary before any dental examination or treatment is provided. Delegates will learn the legal basis for the current advice on consent, looking at both clinical negligence and GDC investigations with examples from Dental Protection’s extensive archive. Stephen Henderson is Senior Dento-legal adviser at Dental Protection.

The day will start with a reflection on the current GDC Standards guidance, “Standards for the Dental Team” and the impact the new guidance has for all registrants. This will be followed by an explanation of the legal basis for the the current advice on consent, and how the current advice should be applied in a variety of differing circumstances. This seession will involve a discussion about the management of consent in children and adolescents, followed by a discussion of the way the Mental Capacity Act impacts upon dental care.

Throughout the day risk management tips will be offered, and the importance of good and effective record keeping will be discussed. In order to embed the learning, part of each session will involve group discussion and some role play.
