Plaque & Debris Scoring and Topical Fluoride Varnish Application OSCE (SW15-01-17-1)

DCPs attending this course will have attended a theory day on Saturday 27th September 2014.  Only those attending the 1st part will be able to participate in the OSCE. The OSCE is included in the course fee. Criteria of students entering the course, Registered Dental Nurse with the General Dental Council, (evidence needed) In current employment, Have the written support of his/her employer,Evidence of Professional Indemnity cover, Evidence of appropriate up to date CPD (eg BLS, Medical Emergencies), Not all participants will have undertaken a Dental Nurse Training course which has equivalence to NVQ 3. However it is felt that all students will have the ability to engage in the level of work required to successfully complete this course.DCPs attending this course will be expected to record plaque indicies on patients in their work place and complete a record of expereince with reflection, support from the dental surgeopn is essential. The DCP will also be expected to have completed their fluoride application patient log book so that they can be assessed during this session that they are competent to apply fluoride application, on a patient, from a prescription of their GDP within their own practices.

Mandatory: Dental nurse

To provide the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills needed in order for DCPs to competently use disclosing materials, record the outcome, competently apply topical fluoride varnish and provide appropriate oral health advice.

Students will be able to:

· Check medical history

· Prepare surgery with the required materials and equipment for plaque disclosing and topical fluoride varnish application

· Prepare the patient for plaque disclosing and topical fluoride varnish application

· Be competent and use a safe technique during the practical application of disclosing solution and topical fluoride varnish, recording the outcome of plaque disclosing

· Provide appropriate tooth brushing instruction and oral health advice

· Be able to manage any complications that may occur

· Ensure continuity of care for the patient
